JEE and NEET to be combined into one exam?

A proposal by the UGC to combine the NEET, one of the two biggest entrance exams for medical programs, and JEE into the new Common University Entrance Test (CUET) this year has been circulated. If accepted, we would see JEE and NEET combined into CUET.

The University Grants Commission (UGC), according to the most recent media sources, has sent a proposal that will combine the NEET and JEE Main exams into CUET (Common University Entrance Test), making it one entrance test for all.

According to Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the UGC, in an interview with the TOI, the commission is working on a proposal that would combine the separate admission exams for engineering and medicine into the CUET. The UGC chairman further stated that there is no justification for students to take separate exams to demonstrate their proficiency in the same topics.

A committee has also been established to examine the feasibility of combining JEE, NEET, and CUET, according to Professor Kumar, who spoke with TOI.

“The question is: Can we integrate all of these entrance exams so that our students don’t have to take them all on different knowledge bases? While there should be only one entrance exam for students, there should be numerous possibilities for them to apply across disciplines “Kumar spoke to TOI.

“Students’ grades in mathematics, physics, and chemistry can be utilised as a ranking list for students who want to major in engineering, and the same is true for medical school,” he continued.

Why merge NEET and JEE into CUET?

The National Testing Agency, NTA, which runs all of the exams, will have to manage fewer exam dates and locations, as opposed to currently, when there will be a single admission exam for all, according to UGC.

According to the plan, there will only be one entrance exam offered in CBT format twice a year for all JEE, NEET, and CUET candidates. If accepted, students might have the option to sit for the exam twice: once, after the boards, in May-June, and again, in December.

Currently, students must take the NEET exam to pursue careers in medicine and dentistry, the JEE Main exam to enrol in engineering programmes, and the CUET exam to enrol in degree programmes in science, the humanities, and business at various universities.
