At a boisterous Goodison Park, Neal Maupay’s first goal for Everton was enough to give Frank Lampard his first victory of the year, but David Moyes, Lampard’s opponent, was left to mull over a very different attitude for the upcoming international break.

West Ham will enter October in the bottom three after suffering their fifth loss of the season and their 11th in their last 18 league games dating back to last season.

This was not a game Moyes could afford to lose because the Europa Conference League matches had already increased West Ham’s workload and provided unwelcome distractions.

And some of his long-standing, established stars’ efforts left the seasoned manager unimpressed.

On the other hand, Lampard’s current state of mind was best expressed immediately after the final whistle when he ran over to his goal scorer and gave him a long embrace.

Maupay struck after 53 minutes, and following an instantly forgettable first half, when Alex Iwobi played a short, sharp pass that eluded Declan Rice and allowed the striker to take a tidy controlling touch.

When Thilo Kehrer failed to contain the Frenchman, a Lampard acquisition who arrived at Goodison late in the summer transfer window, Maupay’s half-volley from 16 yards flew past Lukasz Fabianski.

It was Maupay’s first goal in 12 games, his first since February, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for both player and team.

He’s a proven Premier League scorer, which is why we brought him in, said Lampard.

“There were times in games where we could have gained more points with a little more clinical finishing, but we had to play with false nines and wingers as the number nine.

“You have to find other ways to win without a goalscorer in the team, but he now gives us another dimension, and you can see we’ve added a lot in the dressing room,” the coach said.

There were few dissenting voices at a relieved Goodison Park on the final whistle yesterday, despite a winless start to the season casting doubt on Everton’s prospects this year and even Lampard’s short-term employment prospects.

The minute of silence at Goodison was marred by a few jeers from the crowd, as had been the case at several other locations this weekend. Prior to the game, the focus had been on the tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth.

Before the second half got off to a much brighter start and resulted in the goal and chances at both ends for the remainder of the game, the football was forgettable once it got going.

The best came from West Ham, who had 14 shots on goal but failed to score, and who really ought to have saved a point for Moyes upon his return to Goodison.

After 68 minutes, Tomas Soucek glanced a header in response to an Aaron Cresswell corner that bounced inches wide. Five minutes later, Said Benrahma came even closer when a superb Soucek tackle allowed him to curl a 25-yard shot against the post.

Begovic, filling in for the injured Jordan Pickford, made a superb last-ditch save to tip over a shot from Hammers substitute Maxwel Cornet as the visitors continued to apply late pressure.

Everton player ratings

Asmir Begovic, who started for Lampard in place of the injured Jordan Pickford, made a deft stop to stop a well-placed Cornet effort late in the game and tip a crossshot from Bowen over the crossbar.

Patterson, Nathan a constant presence in West Ham’s half on the right wing. The Scottish player needs to improve his attacking play, but he is a willing runner and offers plenty of energy. Got a crucial touch just as it appeared that Cornet would tie the score 7

Coady, Conor made a crucial intervention to stop Antonio from tapping in, but later received a booking for bringing the West Ham forward down after being spun on the halfway line. has developed a strong defense-center partnership with Tarkowski 8

James Tarkowski – After a spine-shattering challenge on Antonio, the Goodison faithful rose to their feet as he made an outstanding block of a Bowen attempt. Easily integrated into his new club 8

Vitaliy Mykolenko – The Ukrainian is unable to make an impact up front but is incredibly reliable at the back and did a good job of containing Bowen 7

Idrissa Gueye, who returned from PSG toward the end of the transfer window, was brought in for his second full debut in an Everton jersey. The Senegalese gives the midfield a sense of calm and authority.

By Andre Onana Refused West Ham’s interest in the summer to join Everton instead, and with an all-action performance, he demonstrated why he is quickly becoming a fan favourite at Goodison. 7

Mr. Alex Iwobi Iwobi, a player who under Lampard underwent a significant transformation, is the one who passed the ball to Maupay for the game-winning goal for Everton.

Gray, Demarai Gray‘s performance has been overshadowed by Gordon’s exploits, despite the fact that he was the day’s most dangerous attacker from either side. Both West Ham full-backs were troubled by the winger’s speed and cunning. Unfortunately, given the calibre of his crosses into the box, he did not record an assist.

Anthony Gordon – He was unusually quiet, and when he unnecessarily hauled Cornet back, it was obvious that he was frustrated at not having more influence. With 15 seconds left, Dwight McNeil took his place. Not his fifth day

Neal Maupay made his first appearance for Everton after launching a beautiful shot over Fabianski from the edge of the box, and this goal will do the Brighton player the world of good.

Dr. Thilo Kehrer has had a strong start for West Ham and received praise for his performance from Sky Sports commentator Jamie Carragher after making a well-timed tackle on Gray inside the box.

Mr. Kurt Zouma With a deft header, he forced a simple save from Begovic and was the main threat from set pieces for West Ham.

Cresswell, Aaron took a few risky set plays, but there wasn’t much of an open play threat. faces competition from summer signing Emerson 6 for his spot.

Mr. Tomas Soucek Sloppy with the ball in his hands and appears to have lost the attacking edge that characterised his first year playing for West Ham 6

Mr. Declan Rice Not at his most influential best, which naturally reduces West Ham’s chances of winning. Cut a frustrated figure as his team’s lead in the game diminished 6

Early in the second half, Jarrod Bowen pounced on a half-chance and fired a half-volley over the crossbar. It’s the kind of effort that, during the previous campaign, would have found the top corner. Another frustrating day culminated when Tarkowski blocked a shot by the England winger. nearly provided Cornet with a late equaliser 6

Lucas Paqueta – At times struggled with the game’s tempo and was guilty of using his hands excessively. departed at the hour mark after having only a minor effect on the game 5

Mr. Pablo Fornals To make room for Paqueta, Fornals was forced into the starting lineup on the left wing, where he struggled to exert his usual influence. Similar to the Brazilian, he was removed after five hours.

Despite Scamacca’s thunderbolt in Silkeborg, Michail Antonio was selected ahead of the Italian, and with 20 minutes remaining, his fellow striker took his place. looked dangerous at times, but Coady and Tarkowski generally had them under control 6

Subs:

Said Benrahma, who had a spectacular bending long-range effort that rattled the inside of the post, demonstrated why West Ham fans dislike him by drifting a terrible corner straight out of play.

Maxwel Cornet – May have felt unfairly treated after being dropped following his Thursday Conference League goal and assist. Stung Begovic’s palms with a determined effort, but soon after missed a glorious opportunity. His contribution should earn him a starting position following the international break.

Scammaca, Gianluca Unable to get into the game, he let his frustration get the best of him when, late on, after another aggressive challenge on Gueye 5, he flew into a careless challenge and started a melee.
