Launch of the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems at IIT Madras for research and educational output

A Center for Indian Knowledge Systems has been established at IIT Madras to concentrate on research, instruction, and public outputs in four subject areas. A MoU was signed by Professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy and Shri Kumar Tuhin to formally establish the relationship between ICCR and IIT Madras.

Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, President of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi, and Shri Kumar Tuhin, Director General of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, New Delhi, launched the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems.

The Center’s Principal Investigator is Dr. Aditya Kolachana. Prof. Arun Menon, Prof. Manu Santhanam, Prof. Santosh Kumar Sahu, Prof. Sudarsan Padmanabhan, Prof. Rajesh Kumar, and Prof. Jyotirmaya Tripathy are some of the other IIT Madras professors who work at this centre. The Indian Knowledge Systems Division of the Indian Ministry of Education provides funding for the Center.

The Centre will concentrate on the following four subject areas: Indian Mathematics and Astronomy, Architectural Engineering, Vstu and Ilpa-stra, Indian Political and Economic Thought, and Indian Aesthetics and Grammatical Traditions.

Research output: The Centre strives to disseminate the findings through conducting academic seminars and conferences in addition to publishing high-caliber research on Indian Knowledge Systems. Collaborations with researchers and institutions from other fields will be necessary for the study.


Teaching product: The Center will initially create and provide IIT Madras students with courses pertaining to the thematic areas. These courses will then be made available on the NPTEL portal for further distribution.

Public engagement: The Centre intends to offer workshops to introduce different facets of Indian Knowledge Systems to school instructors and students. The Centre also intends to communicate with the public through well-known works, social media posts, etc.
