A still from the game, Stray (2022)

The tag “Cats Watching Stray” now has over 34.7 thousand followers on Twitter, which came as a surprise even to the devs!

For those of you clueless about what the hype is all about, Stray is a 2022 Simulation Adventure Game, developed by BlueTwelve Studio for PS4, PS5, and Microsoft Windows. It follows the storyline of an inquisitive, orange stray cat, who accidentally falls into a city bound by walls and inhabited by machines and monstrosity of bacteria.

Adventure unfolds when the cat, assisted by a drone ‘B-12’, sets out on its path to find a way back to its city, known as ‘The Outside’ by the rusty inhabitants of the city devoid of humankind. When the cat in Stray becomes separated from the other cats, it enters a bizarre cyberpunk world full of robot creatures that initially fear the cat but eventually come to like it.

The bipedal nature of the robots and their ability to express emotion through screens give them a humanlike appearance. They have metal bodies, though, and they speak a peculiar language, which the cat finds challenging to comprehend its surroundings. Fortunately, the drone it befriends, B-12, can translate robot language and help the cat remember its objectives. B-12 can shoot swarming foes known as Zurks, illuminate shadowy locations, and collect objects in addition to being a proficient translator.

The story unfolds to suggest that humans, while in the darkness of the walled city, built robots as helpers, which the robots ultimately inherited. Most people think life has been wiped out, and that the real world is no longer inhabitable. With the arrival of our feline friend, a spark of hope is seen amongst the metal bodies, that ‘The Outside’ is again inhabitable.

The drone B-12 has a storyline of its own, which uncovers as the story progresses.

The fate of humans remains unclear, but the scope for a sequel presents itself as the feline finally manages to return to ‘The Outside’, and the robotic life sees sunlight for the first time.

The adorable protagonist and the mysterious walled city are being admired by gamers all over the world.
