Do I have to burn the Erdtree in Elden Ring?

The Erdtree must be destroyed in order to advance in the main story. In order to progress to the final boss, you must start a fire in the tree. Doing it yourself or having Melina do it for you is your choice. You will be unable to proceed unless you burn the Erdtree.

What happens after burning the Erdtree?

The Royal Capital of Leyndell becomes Leyndell, the Ashen Capital, following the destruction of the Erdtree. The sewers are now inaccessible due to the blockage of most entrances and items. However, the well in the Ashen Capital’s lowest section can still be used to descend into the sewers if necessary.
